Thank You Letter for the Renovation of Father Demo Square
April

Honorable Christine Quinn
Councilmember
224 W. 30th Street — Suite 1206
New York, NY 10001
Dear Councilmember Quinn;
On behalf of the residents of Greenwich Village the Greenwich Village
Block Associations (GVBA) wishes to express its support and appreciation
for the
renovation
of Father Demo Square. The GVBA is particularly pleased that residents
and business owners were given many opportunities to obtain
information and
to voice opinions and concerns. We believe that the final plan has the
enthusiastic consensus of the community and we look forward to its
realization. In this
instance, the democratic process worked effectively and efficiently.
We hope that the redesign of Father Demo Square will prompt further improvements
in the vicinity of Carmine and Bleecker Streets. We are well aware that
this project has been made possible because of the generous funding that
your office
has made available. The new design balances aesthetic and practical considerations
as well as paying homage to the history of the area and to the revered
memory of Father Demo. Because of the role Father Demo played in the
Italian immigrant
community during the early part of the 20th century and because of his
critical stand in response to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, visitors
to the
Square should have an opportunity to learn why this public space was
named in his honor.
We congratulate all concerned who are bringing the renovation of Father
Demo Square to fruition. This includes the New York City Parks Department,
participating
members of Community Board 2, the Church of Our Lady of Pompeii and neighborhood
residents and business owners who came together with good will, community
spirit and the sensitivity to negotiate and achieve a compromise. Again,
thank you
for your vital role in reinvigorating a precious, but somewhat neglected,
part of our community.
