Dear Ms. Karan,
The Greenwich Village Block Associations (GVBA) is a community wide
coalition of organizations dedicated to preserving and improving the
quality of life
for residents in our historic neighborhood. Meredith Bergman and I appreciate
your taking the time to show us around your late husband’s studio and
to discuss your proposal to place the Stephan Weiss sculpture of the “Big
Apple” in the Charles Street section of the Hudson River Park. The
GVBA supports the concept of public art. Many of our public spaces, including
parks,
are enhanced by the appropriate placement of sculpture and other art objects.
Because the long awaited Hudson River Park is so critical to and highly prized
by the community, Villagers want everything sited in it to be of the finest
quality and highest aesthetic value.
We also appreciate your plan to turn the Stephan Weiss Studio into a gallery
to display his work as well as the work of other artists. Greenwich Village
has been a fertile ground for the development of all of the arts and we
trust that it will continue to be so in the future. As you may be aware,
many artists
have made their creative homes in the Greenwich Village Waterfront District.
We believe that your generous gift would be a sensitive use of a wonderful
space.
Since no one in the GVBA can claim any art expertise, we cannot make any
statement concerning the appropriateness of this particular work for this
specific site.
We are certain, however, that you would want such a cherished piece to
be displayed to its best possible advantage. We believe that the art community
will weigh
in on the matter and we hope that the final decision will be a source of
great satisfaction and pride to you. I enjoyed meeting you: our conversation
was
extremely interesting and enlightening to me. Thank you.
