Letter
to Councilmember James Gennaro
Regarding Legislation to Curb Motorcycle Noise
April 20, 2994
Honorable James Gennaro
Councilmember
Chairman - Environmental Protection Committee
185-10 Union Turnpike
Fresh Meadows, NY 11366
Dear Mr. Gennaro:
The Greenwich Village Block Associations is a community wide coalition of neighborhood
organizations dedicated to preserving and improving the quality of life for
residents of our historic neighborhood. We are informed that the 2nd Public
Hearing for
intro. bills #53, 54, and 55 — concerning motorcycle noise — has
been postponed until the fall.
This news is extremely disappointing and we request that you reconsider
this postponement. This long delay means that for yet another
spring, summer, and
fall — the “high” season for motorcycles — city residents,
particularly those who live in Greenwich Village, will be forced to endure
excessively loud motorcycle noise in our neighborhoods.
The proposed legislation provides some of the tools to enforce already existing
laws — the authority to seize illegal equipment and unavoidable fines
that are severe enough to serve as a deterrent to this illegal behavior. We
appreciate
the concerns of the motorcycle community, however, this noise problem has reached
a crisis because of a failure to persuade a minority of motorcycle riders that
their enjoyment cannot come without regard for the well being of community
residents. Please help city residents to defend their quality of life. We urge
you to schedule
a 2nd hearing without further delay
