Letter to Dunkin Donuts Regarding Problems with New Store
March
12, 2004
Mr. Jon Luther, CEO
Dunkin Donuts
15 Pacella Park Drive
Randolph, MA 02368
Dear Mr. Luther,
The Greenwich Village Block Associations is a community wide coalition
of neighborhood organizations dedicated to preserving and improving
the quality
of life for
residents of our historic community. Recently, a Dunkin Donuts — operating
24 hours a day — opened on Christopher Street near Sheridan Square
in Greenwich Village.
Sheridan Square is a busy intersection with severe problems. Many visitors
who frequent the area routinely exhibit antisocial and criminal behavior.
As an example, a cab driver was recently paralyzed from an attack with
a high
heel shoe just across the street from your new location. We believe that
the Dunkin Donuts plan to operate 24 hours a day will exacerbate existing
problems
in Sheridan Square and make it a neighborhood nuisance.
We understand that the franchise holder for this location claims that
corporate headquarters requires the store to be open for 24 hours a day.
We request
that you require the franchise holder to reduce this store’s hours
of operation. Whatever the agreement may be between the corporate Dunkin
Donuts entity and
Dunkin Donuts franchise holders, the residents of Greenwich Village consider
your corporation to be ultimately responsible for any negative impact
that your franchise may have on our community.
Under different circumstances we might welcome Dunkin Donuts as a new
neighbor and wish the store and its owner great success. But until the
hours of
this franchise become acceptable to a community under continual pressure
and until
the new owner exhibits more community awareness and concern, we cannot
do so. Thank you.
In response the GVBA received a letter from the public relations department
suggesting ways in which we might approach the franchise holder for a contribution.
