Hon. John Doherty
Commissioner NYC Dept. of Sanitation
125 Worth Street
New York, NY 10013
Dear Mr. Doherty,
The Greenwich Village Block Associations (GVBA) is a coalition of organizations
dedicated to preserving and improving the quality of life for residents of
Greenwich Village. In the past few months, our members have been receiving
numerous complaints about absent garbage pails on Village street corners.
This trash problem is exacerbated by the reduction in the number of weekly
pick-ups, the continual influx of visitors to our neighborhood and our charming,
but narrow streets. In short, Greenwich Village is in the midst of a refuse
crisis.
The disappearance of public receptacles is a serious problem. Although we
understand that budget constraints may have reduced the number of replacement
pails available, please give the matter serious attention. We are interested
in learning what factors are considered in the decision making process of
determining where pails are located and how the department arrives at the
number of pails available to each neighborhood.
As an example of our problem, one of the four pails at the corner of Hudson
and Christopher Streets has been missing for more than three months, despite
several calls to the District 2 Office. This intersection is in close proximity
to the Christopher Street PATH station, a public grade school, a busy grocery
store, and a pizza shop — surely, this is a location that warrants
immediate replacement of a missing trash container.
If we can be of any assistance in helping the department to perform more
expeditiously, please give us the necessary information. We would be happy
to work with you. Thank you.
