Dear Member of the Planning Commission;
The Greenwich Village Block Associations is a community wide coalition
of organizations dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of life
for residents of
Greenwich Village. Although we believe that the entire Greenwich Village
Waterfront merits such protection, we commend the work of the Greenwich
Village Society
for Historic Preservation, the Historic Districts Council and all those
who worked tirelessly to achieve this designation for the Gansevoort Market.
It is never possible to persuade everyone to cheerfully put aside personal
gain for the public good. We contend that Greenwich Village has more history
per square foot than any other neighborhood in the country; the Gansevoort
Market is an integral part of that heritage. The Gansevoort Market’s
unique sense of place and its singular architectural integrity are undeniable,
irreplaceable and must be protected.
We understand the economic pressures that prevail in New York and we believe
that historic designation will promote the economic viability of an area
that is already thriving but under enormous development pressure. If conscientiously
enforced, landmarks protection fosters sensible restoration, appropriate
new
construction and creative business opportunity. Greenwich Village exemplifies
how preservation fuels economic vitality. As representatives of its residential
community the Greenwich Village Block Associations supports the creation
of a Gansevoort Market Historic District.
