Motorcycle Noise Petition

Please help show the City Council that New Yorkers are opposed to excessive motorcycle noise!

The West 8th Street Block Association is holding a petition drive to show the extent of our concern. Join us by gathering signatures from your friends and neighbors -- people who live in New York City and understand firsthand the extent of the problem. Any adult who is a legal resident of New York City can sign in support.

Click here to download our petition as an Adobe PDF file. (Each file contains two images, one for the front and one for the back of the petition.)

Please return completed petitions by Saturday, April 30 to the doorman at 2 Fifth Avenue, addressed to Dr. Gil Horowitz, or mail them to him at 2 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10011. Do write your name and phone number on the back. We want to know who our friends are.

We will copy and deliver your petitions to the City Council Committee on Environmental Protection for its hearing on the noise bill, which is expected in early May. Thank you!

Signature Gathering Tips

* Start with the people you know: friends, family, and neighbors.
* Carry petition sheets with you during your daily activities. Take them with you when you go to your office, gym, laundromat or barbershop/hair salon. Have them ready if you have to wait in line somewhere. You never know when you might have an opportunity to collect a signature or two!
* Never argue with or try to convert anyone when working to get his/her signature. Smile, be friendly, and get his/her signature. Remember the 20 second rule: If a person doesn't agree to sign within 20 seconds, move on to someone else! Don't sacrifice the many for the few.
* Ask the person signing to give his/her street address only. No P.O. Box addresses.
* Always check that a signature, name, and address are legible before the person leaves.
* Don't allow anybody to sign for his or her spouse.
* Be careful about dates and signatures. Do not alter a signature.
If the signer must alter or move his/her signature, ask him or her to initial the change. If you change a date, initial the change. You need not initial changes to addresses or town data.
* If you run across someone who is especially enthusiastic about signing, ask him or her to help you gather petitions, give him a copy of the petition and point her to this website. The URL is shown on the petition.

Good Opening Lines to Use When Asking for Signatures

* "Help control motorcycle noise!"
* "Does motorcycle noise bother you?"
* "Excuse me, do you live in the City?"
* "Do you know about the proposed new noise code?"
* "Hey (name of a person you know), would you sign this for me?"
