TO THE BARRICADES: As Villagers. the constant and massive assaults on our precious, historic neighborhood are on the rise. We have been brutalized by NYU, and I’m quite sure they are not through. Parsons, New School, they are, all of them, standing in line to suck up prime Village real estate, removing huge chunks of property from the tax rolls and swamping the locals. Issues are cropping up faster than we can identify them. Please let me try to present two of our most pressing concerns:
1) St. Vincent’s Hospital relocation: For years to come Villagers will have to confront the huge situation inherent in the evacuation, relocating and rebuilding of Saint Vincent’s Hospital.
2) Worse still, the MTA’s search for a location to build possibly TWO 6-STORY Emergency Ventilation TOWERS to be built in a location to be chosen from NINE alternatives. (**61 Greenwich Av; 192 7 AvS; 76 Greenwich Av; / Street-bed possibilities: W.11th south or north of 7th Av & Perry OR north of 7th Av). Depending on whether above or below ground, almost every one of these choices could have a staggering impact on my Block Association’s domain, the Mulry Angle/West 11th Street Blk. Ass’n., and, paired with whatever goes on with St. Vincent’s, could be a knock-out punch for the area. Whatever they build will be forever and could eliminate our last open spaces.

HELLO NEIGHBOR!
We are the Mulry Angle/West 11th Street Block Association, a small but caring group. In times like these, with shared interests and concerns, we need to be closer as neighbors than ever.
Our Block Association has always been a bit of a “Hermit’s Club” since because there are institutions at both ends of West 11th Street (PS 41 & St. Vincent’s Hospital), none of us faces our neighbor, and there are fewer residents. This makes having a close-knit community harder. For that reason, a few years back we reached out to expand our numbers by including the hairpin turn around the corner – the very buildings we’re back-to-back with – along the north side of Greenwich Avenue east to West 10th Street.
Born in St. Vincent’s Hospital, I have lived across the street since 1968, and, for many years I have acted as de facto Chair, in touch with the city, CB #2, local organizations, the office of NY State’s Attorney General etc. We are quiet, but we are here; in union there is strength.
